The view of the Gulf of Mexico from the top of the bridge
The current Matanzas Pass Bridge opened in 1980, and is 65 feet (20 m) tall, making it the second-tallest bridge in Lee County. The tallest bridge in the county is the first bridge of the Sanibel Causeway, which is 70 feet (21 m) tall. The bridge was built this tall to accommodate the area's large shrimping vessels. The current bridge has two traffic lanes, one for northbound traffic and one for southbound traffic. There is also a pedestrian lane, which is separated from the rest of the bridge by a concrete barrier. The bridge's current blue color was added in 2011, making it resemble the Jewfish Creek Bridge in Key Largo.
The current bridge was built to replace a small swing bridge that was installed in 1927. The original Matanzas Pass Bridge was brought in from a location on the east coast of Florida, which was necessary because the island's original toll bridge, which was built in 1921 and ran from the northern tip of the island near Bowditch Point to Bunche Beach on the mainland, was destroyed by a hurricane in 1926. (The route leading up to this bridge on the mainland still exists today, and is known as John Morris Road.)
The original Matanzas Pass Bridge's swing span had to be opened manually by the bridge tender up until 1950, when an electric motor was installed to open the span, since the span needed to be opened frequently for vessels in the area's large shrimping industry. Even with the motor, the bridge was becoming old and unreliable, and island residents feared that the bridge would fail and strand them in the event of a hurricane evacuation. This was the justification for the Bonita Beach Causeway (built in 1964), and later, the current bridge (in 1980).

St. James City is located on the southern tip of the island Pine Island. The next bigger city is Cape Coral.
The seventeen miles long and two miles wide Pine Island is the largest island on Florida’s west coast. The Island is large in size but still have a definite small town feel. With its mix of restaurants, shops, art galleries, marinas and accommodations this community offers a step back into the old Florida.
You’ll find island breezes, beautiful scenery, a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere and friendly natives who invite you to.
The city of Saint Jaimes, where we took the 360 degree aerial shots features several quaint seafood eateries and local watering holes, as well as the St. Jude Harbors subdivision and Cherry Estates trailer park.
This 360 degree panoramic image is part of a virtual walk through Southwest-Florida. It was taken right above the center of the island.
Just an half hour from Fort Myers and 5 minutes from Cape Coral Pine Island offers a quiet, laid-back atmosphere, plenty of great fishing, and lush natural environment. The waterways of Matlacha Pass and in the Pine Island Aquatic Preserve are excellent for kayaking and canoeing. The largest island off Florida’s Gulf Coast, Pine Island offers a small-town atmosphere amid mangroves, three aquatic preserves, and acres of palm, tropical plants and fruit groves. The waters of Pine Island Sound provide not only some of the finest fishing in Florida, but are a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
This Bokeelia is a small hamlet located at the northern end of Pine Island. You'll fall in love with this little paradise, boater and fisherman alike. The balmy breezes and genteel flair affords a serene lifestyle for everyone that calls Bokeelia home. Captains Cove, Captain's Harbor, Marina Gardens and Four Winds communities are the foundation to island living in Bokeelia.
Bokeelia has a romantic past with pirates dashing in and out of Charlotte Harbor with their booty. As early as 1765, Spanish fishing camps were known to exist in this area, supplying Spanish settlements in the Florida Keys and Cuba.
In the early 1900's settlers began arriving in Bokeelia and made a living raising tropical fruit. Drawn to the tranquility at the end of the island with Charlotte Harbor spread out before it, Harry Poe Johnson took advantage of this lovely view by building a southern style mansion about 1914. In 1916, Captain Peter Haines built a house patterned after houses the government built for its troops in the tropics. A native of Maryland and an Annapolis graduate, Captain Haines was forced by tragic circumstances to leave his successful navy career and look for a place to start a new life, and decided to settle in Bokeelia.
Today, as they have in the past, palm plantations and groves of various tropical fruits thrive in Bokeelia. These fruits are shipped all over the United States. Bokeelia still offers an atmosphere of peace and tranquility in a hectic world.
